California Guard Card F.A.Q.

  1. What are the requirements for registering as a security guard?The general requirements are as follows:
    • You must be at least 18 years old,
    • You must undergo a criminal background check through the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and
    • You must complete a 40-hour course of required training.

  1. Do I have to take a drug test? BSIS does not require a drug test in order to apply for a guard card.
  2. How much does it cost to get my guard card?In addition to the cost of your security training classes, you will need to pay for Livescan fingerprinting ($49 + variable “rolling” service fee) and BSIS application processing ($55 for mail-in or online).
  3. How long does the application process take?BSIS usually processes new applications within 30-60 days, but it can be as few as 3-5 days if your information is correct and you have a clean background. While you wait for your actual guard card to arrive in the mail, your name will show up on the BSIS website so employers can verify your security guard registration.
  4. Can I verify that BSIS received my application? You can contact BSIS at (916) 322-4000.
  5. How long does my guard card last?Registration is valid for two years and expires the day after the expiration date on your card. There’s a 60-day grace period during which you can pay a delinquent fee to reinstate your registration. After 60 days, if you haven’t renewed, you must reapply as a new applicant.
  6. How do I renew my guard cardFeel free to visit breeze.ca.gov, create an account and pay for the guard card. It will be an instant renewal once paid with card.

 

  1. What if I lose my guard card or it gets destroyed?Guards who have lost or had a guard card stolen must notify their employer and apply to the Bureau for a replacement within 72 hrs of your registration card being lost.

 

You can submit a card replacement request Online, visit www.breeze.ca.govYou can request a duplicate registration by submitting a written request that explains your situation, along with a $25 fee, to BSIS. It usually takes six to eight weeks to get a replacement.

  1. I’m moving. Do I have to let BSIS know if I change my address? You must notify BSIS in writing within 30 days of an address change. Be sure to print or type the following information:
    • Your security guard registration number,
    • Your name,
    • Your previous address,
    • Your new address,
    • Your date of birth, and
    • Your social security number.
  2. I’m changing employers. Do I need to send in a new guard card application? A guard registration authorizes you to work as a security guard for any private patrol operator or in-house employer.
  3. Can I work for more than one person or company?Yes, as long as you’re an employee on payroll with the proper payroll deductions being made.
  4. I’ve completed PC 832 training (Arrest and Firearms Course) Can I get a guard card? To get the Bureau’s registration/permit, you must complete the Bureau’s training.
  5. I’m an emancipated minor. Can I apply for a guard card? There are no exceptions to the age requirement.
  6. What if I have a felony or misdemeanor conviction?Crimes of violence and felonies automatically disqualify you from applying to be a security guard in the State of California. For all others, the State considers the circumstances surrounding your conviction and evidence of rehabilitation. Just fill out the BSIS application completely and truthfully.
  7. I received a 1203.4 dismissal on my conviction. Do I still need to report it on my application? You must report the conviction.
  8. I was denied a guard card. When can I reapply?You can submit a new application one year from the date of denial.
  9. Can a family member give the power to arrest test to the person who’s applying for a guard card (e.g. father to son)?Yes, if they’re licensed or delegated by a licensed authority to do so.

How To Hard Refresh On A Mobile Device

Chrome Android:

  1. In Chrome, tap the menu button in the upper right hand (three vertical dots).
  2. Go to Settings > Privacy.
  3. Click “Clear Browsing Data”.
  4. In pop up, check the boxes next to the items you want to clear (including your cache) and click “Clear”

Firefox iPhone:

  1. Tap the “Tab” icon at the top right of your screen.
  2. Tap the cogwheel icon that appears on the upper left hand to open the “Settings” menu.
  3. Find the “Privacy” section in the Settings menu, and tap “Clear Private Data”.
  4. Tap the toggle next to the types of information you would like to delete (including your cache).
  5. In the “Clear Everything” Dialog, tap “Clear” to clear all of your data, including history.

Internet Explorer

Windows Phone:

  1. While in the Internet Explorer browser, click the ellipses (three dots) at the bottom of the screen.
  2. In the menu select Settings.
  3. Under Settings, click “Delete History”, confirm by clicking “Delete”
  4. Wait a few moments for your cache to clear.

 

Avoid Examination Errors
  1. Read the instructions before you begin. Note that if we begin the examination we need to finish it before logging out.Otherwise it moves back to the first question.
  2. Internet Explorer will likely give you errors when taking and submitting an class/lesson or Examination. Please use Google Chrome/Firefox.
  3. Close other browsers and windows, and only allow yours to be open when taking the examination.

 

I Forgot my Username/Password.

If you’ve forgotten the password for your 247 guard training, simply follow these steps:

  1. Please click on Lost your password link.
  2. Please enter your username or email address. You will receive a link to create a new password via email.

 

If you set up your 247 guard training with an alternate email address or mobile phone number, we can send you a temporary password. If you had a password of less than 8 characters, the new password as part of security standards will be a minimum of 8 characters.

 

About Temporary Passwords

Temporary passwords expire shortly. Be sure to update your password immediately after being provided a temporary password:

  • You can enter your temporary password when prompted during the online password reset process, or
  • You can log into 247 guard training with your temporary password.

In both cases, you will be prompted to change your password to a new password.You will not be able to reset your password .

I have slow internet and/or frequent connection drops.
To fix this, just get a little closer. If the router is located in a different room, try going into the room where the router is located and see if that fixes the issue. If this is a consistent issue, try to position your router higher (up on a shelf), away from other devices, which can interfere with it, and in a central location in your home.

 

How do I change the time it takes for my computer to lock? How to Set Your Computer to Lock Your Screen Automatically.
  1. Open the Control Panel on the Start menu, click Control Panel.
  2. Click Appearance and Personalization, and then in Personalization Tab /click Change Screen Saver.
  3. In the Wait box, choose 15 minutes
  4. Click On resume, display logon screen, and then click OK.

 

Best Practices

Before you start the Test:

Check your computer settings:

  • Check your internet connection
  • Disable popup blockers and/ or firewalls
  • Make sure your computer is free of viruses and/or spyware

Close all other programs running on your computer before you start a Class/Lesson. Do not take a quiz with other applications running in the background, such as movies, music, e‐mail, or IM (instant messaging).

Be certain that you are ready to take the test and set aside time in which you will be free from interruptions BEFORE clicking on the link to the test.

Do not enter any Class/Quiz until you are ready to take it!
