California’s Bureau of Security & Investigative Services (BSIS) has a “Veterans Come First” program that gives veteran applicants priority in the licensing process and assists in possibly having their military experience and training go towards their BSIS security guard license coursework.

Veterans’ Assistance. Veterans are given direct BSIS email and phone access. Veterans are urged to take advantage of this one-on-one service, especially when determining whether military experience can count toward security guard licensing. BSIS will need a copy of discharge papers and a transcript of any education or training while in the military.

Veteran applicants also get priority in the licensing paperwork process which could typically take as long as 60 days.

Veterans will still need to complete the eight hours of upfront training and pass a written exam before applying for a license. Background checks and fingerprinting must also be completed.

Becoming a licensed security guard is often an excellent career as veterans transition from military to civilian life.
